Overview

The Department of Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) was started in the  year 1986 and has established itself as a center of excellence in education,  research, and industry collaboration. With a legacy of academic rigor and innovation,  the department focuses on developing future-ready engineers equipped with a  unique blend of technical expertise and managerial acumen. 

All faculty members in the department hold Ph.D. degrees and are actively engaged  in cutting-edge research across diverse domains such as Industrial EngineeringManufacturing Science, and Management. Their research output contributes to  both academic advancement and industrial problem-solving, enriching the learning  experience of students. 

The department takes pride in its strong alumni network of over 1700 graduates,  many of whom have made significant contributions in academia, industry,  entrepreneurship, and public service across the globe. Their accomplishments  stand as a testament to the quality of education and mentorship provided. 

With a curriculum designed to meet industry needs and supported by hands-on  learning, the department maintains an impressive track record of student  placements across top-tier companies in manufacturing, consulting, IT, analytics,  and service sectors. 

The IEM department remains committed to nurturing professionals who can lead in  dynamic environments, innovate across processes, and contribute meaningfully to  organizations and society.

Program Details

The department started in the year 1986 has UG program, B.E in Industrial  Engineering and Management and has an intake of 60. The UG program has been  accredited by NBA for 4th cycle and is valid through 01-07-2025.  

The department has VTU approved research center started in the year 2011 and  offers PG program M.Sc. Engineering by research and Ph.D. Till now, 7 research  scholars have been awarded Ph.D. and 2 research scholars have been awarded  M.Sc. Engineering by research from the research center. 6 research scholars are  pursuing Ph.D.

Vision: 

To be a distinguished Centre for the dissemination of knowledge, promoting  research, providing consultancy to societal requirements in the field of Industrial  Engineering and Management.

Mission:  

  1. To practice the philosophy of learning-teaching-learning and adopt the state  of the art pedagogical tools for the effective dissemination of knowledge.
  2. To collaborate with academic institutions, industry and research organizations  to promote research in emerging areas and consultancy to provide  sustainable solutions to societal requirements. 
  3. To impart training for the overall development of students and inculcate  spiritual values.

Infrastructure & Facilities

The Industrial Engineering & Management Department is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities such as Metrology and measurements,  Work-study, Quality engineering, Manufacturing process. Computer lab has systems  of latest configuration and software such as Minitab R 12, Sixth sense ERP, MATlab,  SYSTAT, SPSS, ARENA simulation software, solid edge and many other open  source Software

  • Undergraduate Program:

    • B.E. in Industrial Engineering & Management – A comprehensive 4-year program that equips students with expertise in operations research, production planning, supply chain management, and quality control, preparing them for careers in diverse industries.

    Postgraduate Programs:
    • M.Tech in Industrial Engineering & Management – A specialized program that enhances knowledge in lean manufacturing, logistics, enterprise resource planning, and process optimization.
    • Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering & Management –Research opportunities in advanced areas such as sustainable manufacturing, artificial intelligence in industry, process automation, and ergonomic design.
Syllabus
Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) - UG

Graduates of the Industrial Engineering & Management program will:

1. Graduates will excel in their professional careers, successfully pursue higher  education in Engineering and Management or become entrepreneurs. 

2. Graduates will manage the functioning of an organization and enhance its  competitiveness using contemporary tools in a socially acceptable way.

3. Graduates will demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, and societal responsibility and adapt to current trends by engaging in lifelong learning.

Program Outcomes (POs) - UG

Graduates will be able to:

PO1: Engineering Knowledge: Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural science,  computing, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization as  specified in WK1 to WK4 respectively to develop to the solution of complex  engineering problems.  

PO2: Problem Analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature and analyse complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions with  consideration for sustainable development. (WK1 to WK4)  

PO3: Design/Development of Solutions: Design creative solutions for complex  engineering problems and design/develop systems/components/processes to meet  identified needs with consideration for the public health and safety, whole-life cost,  net zero carbon, culture, society and environment as required. (WK5)  

PO4: Conduct Investigations of Complex Problems: Conduct investigations of  complex engineering problems using research-based knowledge including design  of experiments, modelling, analysis & interpretation of data to provide valid  conclusions. (WK8).  

PO5: Engineering Tool Usage: Create, select and apply appropriate techniques,  resources and modern engineering & IT tools, including prediction and modelling  recognizing their limitations to solve complex engineering problems. (WK2 and  WK6)  

PO6: The Engineer and The World: Analyse and evaluate societal and  environmental aspects while solving complex engineering problems for its impact

on sustainability with reference to economy, health, safety, legal framework, culture  and environment. (WK1, WK5, and WK7).  

PO7: Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics, human  values, diversity and inclusion; adhere to national & international laws. (WK9) 

PO8: Individual and Collaborative Team work: Function effectively as an  individual, and as a member or leader in diverse/multi-disciplinary teams. 

PO9: Communication: Communicate effectively and inclusively within the  engineering community and society at large, such as being able to comprehend and  write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations  considering cultural, language, and learning differences  

PO10: Project Management and Finance: Apply knowledge and understanding of  engineering management principles and economic decision-making and apply these  to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, and to manage projects and  in multidisciplinary environments.  

PO11: Life-Long Learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and  ability for i) independent and life-long learning ii) adaptability to new and emerging  technologies and iii) critical thinking in the broadest context of technological change.  (WK8)
